"Respect and Kindness for All"

A wise and legendary former teacher at Marist used to begin every period by writing the words "Respect and Kindness for All" on his chalkboard. In my English class, I ask all of my students to show consideration for the ideas and contributions of others by listening attentively and responding respectfully. Classroom discussions are imperative as we attempt to appreciate and understand the literature we study in this course. All students are expected to not only contribute to classroom discussions, but to appreciate, value, and respect the opinions of their classmates with the understanding that every student at Marist High School comes from their own unique upbringing and background. It is this diverse community that allows students to grow as faith-filled individuals who are willing to listen to, communicate with, and learn alongside their peers and teachers. If, at any time during the school year a student does not respect the thoughts and values of a classmate, the following steps will be taken:

  1. An after class discussion between myself and the student after first offense
  2. After a second offense, there will be communication with parents via e-mail or phone as well as a referral to the Dean's office.

I look forward to an excellent year filled with interesting discussions and thought-provoking lessons!
